Here's the first pattern I've made up that I've actually written down...
It hasn't been test knitted yet...if you find any problems, please let me know.

Materials: 1 skein Bernat Softee Chunky shown in Tropic Twists (I got 2 hats out of one skein) Set of 4 US 10 1/2, 6.5mm DPNs Tapestry needle to weave in ends

Skills needed:
basic knowledge of abbreviations

knitting in the round
i-cord

Gauge: 14 sts=4" in stockinette stitch
Size: 6-12 months?

Cast on 52 sts. Join, making sure the sts aren't twisted.
~Work 5 rounds of 2x2 rib

(k2, p2 around)
~Switch to stockinette and work til hat measures 4" including brim. (make it slightly longer if you plan to fold up the brim.)
~k11, k2tog around-48 sts
~1 round stockinette
~k4, k2tog around-40 sts
~1 round stockinette
~k3, k2tog around-32 sts
~1 round stockinette
~k2, k2tog around-24 sts
~k2tog around-12 sts
This is where you start the i-cords...
~divide the remaining 12 sts evenly on 3 needles.
~working one needle at a time, do a 4 st i-cord for 5 rnds
~bind off and repeat for other 2 needles.
~sew up hole at top.
~ENJOY!!!

The hat would be a very good method to use up a number of those leftover yarn scraps. You can find more details on FAQ on the site AnimalHeadGear.com :: The Best Animal Hats Online.
